Launch of NASA MMS Quartet on a ULA Atlas V

On Thursday, March 12 at 22:44 EDT a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V-421 rocket lifted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s (CCAFS) Space Launch Complex-41 (SLC-41) with NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) quartet of satellites built by the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

The mission’s four identical observatories will orbit earth — providing the first ever three-dimensional view of magnetic reconnection –a fundamental process that occurs throughout the universe during which interaction between magnetic fields results in explosive energy that can accelerate particles to nearly the speed of light.
